Tile Etching

Tile etching is a treatment that is suitable for domestic, commercial and industrial environments. Over time and with excessive foot traffic, tiles can experience a build-up of dirt and grime. Whilst regular cleaning is recommended, tile acid etching is also often needed to ensure safety for those walking on the tiled surface. We work with a number of local resorts, hotels, entertainment attractions and restaurants to ensure safety for their clients.

Areas That Suit Tile Etching

Some of the common areas we treat with acid tile etching include the following:

How Does Tile Acid Etching Work?

Slipsafe Gold Coast and South Brisbane uses an acid etching technique that creates a microscopic tread pattern in the surface of the tile.

The etching agent reacts with the glaze and the silica composition of the tile, which chemically changes the structure of the tile surface. This changes the overall surface roughness and porosity of the tile, hence increasing the slip resistance.

We apply the tile etching treatment and then conduct an industrial clean to remove existing dirt and grime. We then wash away any remaining treatment product to leave your tiles looking as good as new.

Different degrees of slip resistance can be achieved which is dependent on the type of tiles. We can adjust the strength of the treatment, time that the treatment is applied for and how many applications are required to suit your tiled surface.

How Long Does It Take?

The process is fairly quick and the results are immediate. A Slipsafe tile-etched treated surface can be walked on straight after application. Swimming pools can be used straight after a tile etching treatment to prevent slippery pool tiles.

Will My Tiles Look Any Different?

In most cases there will be a minimal change in the appearance of your tiles. We always explain what you should expect from the recommended treatment when we visit your site to quote on the job.

Please note that some highly glazed or dark-coloured tiles may result in a matte or duller appearance.

Can I Get My Tiles Slip Tested?

Slipsafe Gold Coast & Brisbane South offers all of our clients a guarantee that our tile etching treatments will meet the current Australian Standards.

However, we recommend that an independent slip-test be carried out following the application of one of our tile treatments. The testing of treated surfaces will ensure that the ‘Slipsafe’ treatment will render the treated surfaces slip resistive when wet to conform to the current Australian Standards AS 4663 (2013) & AS 4586 (2013).

We recommend engaging Slip Test to conduct an independent test of your tiled areas.
